Inc. est. 1867 Gardner Mass. Windsor Arm Chairs in Jet Black. Photos of all sides: https://www.flickr.com/photos/halo-tlc/albums/72157670412904014 The Bent Brothers Furniture Inc. was started in Gardner Mass in 1867. The original stamp is pressed into these chairs under the seat. Windsor chairs are known as tradition colonial American furniture and well used within our court houses and historical homes. The chair takes its name from England where it was originated in 1710. I do enjoy restoring an original painted collectible to its original state. With museum restoration, it is important to keep the same manufacture standards and to blend in the restored with the original. Your collectible will retain its value when appraised if it is close to its original manufactured state. Often these chairs wear off the original paint. It is important not to paint the whole chair, but to blend new paint with the old. There are many reasons for this. One reason is, one does not want too thick of a coat since, paint will chip. Wood flexes, paint might not. These chairs are specifically designed to flex. The spindles area of arrow design also known as the Lyman Mower influence with spindles spaying out from narrow to tulip bulb and back. Control of paint to flex can be done with thinning out the supply and applying multiple applications, only where needed. Synthetics were not used on these chairs so keep the oil natural look. Give it more drying time so it can soak into the wood. The quality for these chairs have been in great demand for the company survived just until the new millennium and the standards did not change with the long time line. To find sets of these chairs to match another set is earlier when looking for Bent & Bros. Most invested in pairs for the price of the chairs were not cheap due to the labor and the material used. The chairs have kept their value and survive through out the ages due to the quality. This set would have been kept near the foyer, reading area, bedroom or hearth. I cleaned, conditioned and touched up areas which were worn. All joints have been reglued. The fan-back acquires its extra strength from the additional two braces which raise from the bob-tail -- an extension at the rear of the seat also known as a crest rail. Great for those who love to stretch back in a chair. The seats are nicely sculpted to make long sitting comfortable. This is very important with hard wood. The wood is dense rock maple. The legs splay outward for good stability, a great feature for climbing kids. The back is seam bent, the arms nicely ribbon curved with knuckle grips for standing leverage. The American Windsors were stained and polished rather than painted. It is clearly stated by the professionals that repainting these chairs will diminish the value of the original finish, so staining is most desirable, please keep chalk paint away.
